Now there was definitely subtle stuff going on. I deemphasized my position and played up his, knowing from the emotional information I picked up earlier which of the two points was more important for him. I did take a little bit of a risk, because it was possible that he could have said, “You know what, let the press in—I want my mug on the front page of the Post tomorrow.” But the risk was fairly small compared to the payoff: surrender in an isolated and easily controlled area.
