Going with The Gimp

Although OOo Draw is a wonderful tool, it has its limits. If you want to create graphics for a Web site; do extensive photo retouching, image composition, or image authoring; or perform most other truly advanced image functions, you should try The Gimp (http://gimp.org). This program is free and runs on many different operating systems, including Linux, UNIX, Windows, and Mac OS X.

The Gimp offers many features, plug-ins, and capabilities:

  • A full suite of painting tools: brushes, pencil, airbrush, and cloning

  • Memory management

  • High-quality anti-aliasing

  • Alpha channel support

  • Multiple undo/redo

  • Supports the GIF, JPEG, PNG, XPM, TIFF, TGA, MPEG, PS, PDF, PCX, and BMP file formats and many others

This is only a small list of the features and capabilities that The Gimp has to offer.

But if your graphic needs are simple, OOo Draw will probably do everything you need to liven up your text documents, slide shows, and spreadsheets.
