Adding Footnotes However and Wherever You Want Them

First, put the cursor where you want the footnote number. Then select Insert > Footnote.

The Insert Footnote dialog box.

Most people choose Automatic numbering, but if you prefer to number the footnotes by hand (or you don't want to use numbers), select Character and type the name of the footnote in the space provided.

Under Type are two options, Footnote and Endnote. Footnotes appear at the bottom of the page where they are referenced. Endnotes appear together at the end of the document (similar to a bibliography). Make your selection and click OK.
