Network protocols are used to connect client computers to a server. A network protocol, which is a language that computers use to share data, is required in either an Internet or intranet environment. The Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) is the underlying network protocol used over the Internet. TCP/IP can also be used on an intranet, although other networking protocols, such as NetBEUI, are designed specifically for LANs. This lesson describes the TCP/IP protocol, and explains how to configure and troubleshoot it. It also explains how to use FTP to transfer files over the internet.
After this lesson you will be able to:Estimated lesson time 25 minutes
- Describe how data is transferred from one computer on a network to another using TCP/IP.
- Choose the appropriate network protocol for a given situation.
- Connect to an FTP server.
- Manually configure TCP/IP on a Windows 95 machine.
- Use TCP/IP utilities to troubleshoot a network problem.
