Chapter 2: TCPIP Basics

Chapter 2

TCP/IP Basics

About This Chapter

This chapter provides an overview of the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) protocol suite as it relates to information security. You are expected to already understand the basics of TCP/IP. After reviewing this chapter, you will know enough to understand how the various TCP/IP protocols are exploited to hack your network.

If you are not comfortable with the construction of IP packets, read Request for Comment (RFC) 791, which can be found through the RFC Editor Website at http://rfceditor.org, or in the \RFC folder on the Supplemental Course Materials CD-ROM that comes with this book. For detailed information, see the Microsoft Windows 2000 TCP/IP Protocols and Services Technical Reference by Thomas Lee and Joseph Davis (Microsoft Press, 2000).

Before You Begin

The prerequisite knowledge expected for the Security+ candidate is the CompTIA A+ and Network+ certifications or equivalent knowledge, along with knowledge and experience with TCP/IP. There are no prerequisites for this chapter, but this book assumes you meet the prerequisites specified by CompTIA.
