Microsoft BizTalk Accelerator for HIPAA streamlines the development and deployment of integration solutions for data exchange that is consistent with the standard regulations of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). HIPAA was enacted primarily to improve the portability and continuity of individual and group health insurance coverage in the United States. HIPAA mandates that health care organizations comply with HIPAA guidelines when they transmit information electronically. The goal of HIPAA is to reduce health care costs without impacting. After HIPAA is instituted (currently slated for October 16, 2003), there will be one content set and one format that all must accept.

BizTalk Accelerator for HIPAA enables organizations in the health care industry to exchange, monitor, and control HIPAA-specific transactions. Built as an add-on to Microsoft BizTalk Server 2002, BizTalk Accelerator for HIPAA provides the necessary document specifications and components that enable customers to develop BizTalk Server 2002-based solutions that are HIPAA-specific. BizTalk Accelerator for HIPAA includes all the document specifications and components that you need to rapidly develop and deploy applications for processing the full range of HIPAA-specific transactions using Microsoft BizTalk Server 2002. All HIPAA transaction set schemas represented as annotated XML-Data Reduced (XDR) document specifications in BizTalk Server.

BizTalk Accelerator for HIPAA also takes advantage of the BizTalk Server 2002 platform for converting other document formats into Extensible Markup Language (XML), data mapping and transformation, application integration, and electronic data interchange (EDI). In addition to handling data transfer and application integration, BizTalk Server 2002 includes a suite of tools, which provide several interfaces for creating and transforming XML files and for control of business processes. BizTalk Server 2002 is a member of the Microsoft .NET Enterprise Servers family of products.

This accelerator helps the health care insurance industry build standards-based technology solutions and reduce the amount of time and money that organizations need to spend to comply with HIPAA regulations. Health care and allied organizations affected by HIPAA can use the integration capabilities of BizTalk Server 2002 to automate business processes and quickly build integration solutions. This helps them to comply with federal law while leveraging existing IT investments. The interoperability of BizTalk Server 2002 with health care and allied organizations' legacy systems, combined with the BizTalk HIPAA schemas, provides the industry with the tools to meet the HIPAA mandate.
