The newest Wi-Fi standard, 802.11g is an extension to 802.11b and provides the throughput of 802.11a while using the 2.4 GHz band. 802.11g is backward compatible with 802.11b and can coexist on the same WLAN. However, mixed standard WLANs (802.11b and 802.11g) often experience slower throughput speed than WLANs implementing a single standard. 802.11g is susceptible to the same sources of interference as is 802.11b because it also operates in 2.4 GHz band.
