Before you start adding Skype Names, you may want to make a test call to ensure that your headset (or microphone and speakers) works properly. Be sure these devices are plugged in before you start. Here is how to make a test call: 1. | Select Skype Test Call in your Contacts list (or enter echo123 in the text box at the bottom of the Skype main window), and click the big green Call button.
| 2. | If your microphone and speakers (or headset) are working properly, you should hear a prerecorded voice asking you to leave a 10-second message that will then be played back to you.
| 3. | Record your message.
| 4. | If you hear the prerecorded message plus your own voice, you can safely assume that Skype is working properly.
| 5. | If you hear the recording but don't hear your own voice in the playback, you will need to adjust your recording settings for your microphone.
| | | 6. | To adjust the volume of your microphone, speakers, or headset, choose Start > Settings > Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices (Mac OS X users: Choose Apple > System Preferences > Sound).
| Microsoft Windows Users To adjust your microphone settings, follow these steps: 1. | On your computer, select Accessories > Entertainment > Sound Recorder.
| 2. | Try to record your speech and play it back.
| 3. | If you still can't hear your recording, go the Sounds and Audio section of Control Panel and try adjusting the microphone settings until the recording test works, or refer to Chapter 7 for more information.
| 4. | To adjust the volume of your speakers or headset, go to the Sound Control Panel.
| Mac OS X Users To adjust your microphone settings, follow these steps: 1. | Open your System Preferences, select Sound, choose Input, and adjust the input level so that it registers your voice at approximately 75 percent.
| 2. | If you still can't hear your recording, choose Skype > Preferences Audio to make sure that the audio input is set to use the appropriate audio input device.
If that doesn't work, refer to Chapter 7 for more information.
| 3. | To adjust the volume of your speakers or headset, use your keyboard audio control, or go to the Sound System Preference and increase the output volume.
| Note You can make a test call at any time by calling the Skype Name echo123 answering service. |
