Variation: Add a little color

Here is a great technique if you are printing on a personal color printer and want an image with a certain hue: for example, if you are going to print a head shot, and you want it to have a warm sepia tone.

Note: If you are using a professional printer and want to add a color, the image will be called a duotone, and the printer will set it up for you.

Remove the color. In this process, your image will stay in RGB mode; however, you still need to remove the color. To do this, choose Enhance > Adjust Color > Remove Color.

Add back one color. In this next step, you will be working with an adjustment layer. Adjustment layers provide a marvelous way to apply edits to your image that are nondestructivewhich means that you can go back and change the edits at any time.

Click the Layers arrow to open the Layers palette. Click the Adjustment Layers () located at the top of the palette. Choose Hue/Saturation.

Adjust the hue. First, make sure the Colorize box is checked. Then drag the Hue slider until you see your desired color. Experiment with the saturation of the color by dragging the Saturation slider. When you are satisfied with the result, click OK. If you want to change the settings later, double-click the layer thumbnail on the Layers palette.

Save an export version. Again, save the original; then choose File > Save As, rename the file, and save the file in TIFF format.

DESIGN TIP: Print colors professionally

When using a page layout program such as InDesign, you can choose an accent color for text, graphics, and images. If you go to a print shop, this will be called a spot color. This process is most commonly referred to as printing a duotone. In choosing your spot color, you should select a color that will work in a variety of tint percentages or shades. Here are some good tips for working with color.

WORKS FOR EVERYTHING Your color needs to be dark enough to be used for type as well as for photos.

BEWARE Light colors such as yellow, orange, and cyan can disappear at tints of less than 80 percent.
