Glossary

absolute cell reference

A way to write a cell address in a formula so that, when you copy the formula, Quattro Pro does not adjust the cell address to refer to new cells. For example, if A7 contains the formula @SUM($A$1.$A$6) and you copy A7 to B7, Quattro Pro does not change the formula to @SUM($B$1.$B$6).

active notebook

When several notebooks are open simultaneously, the active notebook is the notebook in the foreground on which you are working.

amortization schedule

A schedule that breaks down each payment of a loan into its principal and component parts.

audit a spreadsheet

Using features in Quattro Pro to determine which cells on a spreadsheet are included in a particular formula and to determine which formula uses a particular cell.

bin value

Part of a frequency distribution, which indicates the frequency with which values occur in a list. Bin values represent the highest value for group of values. Suppose that the bin values are 85, 90, 95, and 100. The frequency distribution results identify the number of values in the list that are less than or equal to 85, the number of values in the list that are between 86 and 90, the number of values in the list that are between 91 and 95, and the number of values in the list that are between 96 and 100.

cell

The intersection of a row and a column on a spreadsheet. Each cell is referred to by its column letter and row number, which is called the cell address. The address of the cell in the upper-left corner of a spreadsheet is A1.

Cell selector

When you click a cell in a spreadsheet, a dark black border surrounds the cell; Quattro Pro refers to the dark black border as the Cell selector.

CrossTab report

A report you use when trying to analyze database information from a variety of viewpoints. For example, use a CrossTab report to analyze sales made by four different salespeople of three different products to customers located in six cities.

criteria table

Used when finding information in a spreadsheet database, a criteria table is a minimum of two rows. The first row contains field names in the spreadsheet database, and the second row contains the information for which you are searching.

database

A collection of similar information like your local telephone book, which contains names, addresses, and phone numbers. In a database, the information is laid out so that you can easily identify each element of the database.

experts

Guides that help you by walking you through the steps of performing various tasks. In other programs you use, you may hear these guides referred to as wizards.

field

One piece of information in a database record. If the database is a phone book, one field in the database is the phone number field. Fields are usually represented as column headings in a Quattro Pro spreadsheet database.

font

The style of typeface used when typing text or entering numbers.

frequency distribution

A table that helps you identify the number of values in a list that fall between several ranges of numbers.

function

Built-in mathematical calculations for commonly used math, such as summing a column of numbers. Functions in Quattro Pro always begin with @.

Input Line

The row above the column letters of a spreadsheet; when you select a cell, the contents of the cell appears in the Input Line. For example, if the selected cell contains a formula, the formula appears in the Input Line while the result of the formula appears in the selected cell.

join cells

The process of combining two or more cells into one cell.

maximize

To enlarge a window so that it fills the entire screen, making other windows seem to disappear. In fact, the others windows are still open; they are behind the maximized window.

menu

An element at the top of the Quattro Pro screen that you can open to select a command. Different menus appear at the top of the screen to help group commands with similar functions.

minimize

To reduce a window to nothing more than a bar containing the window's title. Minimizing can help you temporarily move a window out of the way so that you can view other windows.

notebook

The document you build while you work in Quattro Pro; a notebook contains a collection of 256 spreadsheets.

QuickCorrect

The portion of the Spelling Checker feature that automatically corrects commonly misspelled words.

Quick Tip

The message that appears as you pause the mouse pointer over a button.

range

A group of cells, referred to by the address of the cell in the upper-left corner of the group and the address of the cell in the lower-right corner of the group.

Range Picker

A button that appears at the edge of a text box in many dialog boxes. You use the Range Picker button to select a range on which to operate. When you click a Ranger Picker button, Quattro Pro collapses the dialog box to just a bar containing the dialog box title and a Maximize button. You can then select a range and click the Restore button to redisplay the dialog box. When you redisplay the dialog box, the selected range appears in the text box beside the Ranger Picker button.

record

One complete entry in a database. If the database is a phone book, one record in the database contains the name, address and phone number of one person in the phone book. Each record appears on a single row in a Quattro Pro spreadsheet database.

relative cell reference

A way to write a cell address in a formula so that, when you copy the formula, Quattro Pro adjusts the cell address to refer to new cells. For example, if A7 contains the formula @SUM(A1.A6) and you copy A7 to B7, Quattro Pro adjusts the formula to @SUM(B1.B6).

search output range

The area of a spreadsheet where you view the results of your query. Quattro Pro copies database records that match your search criteria into the search output range.

SpeedFormatting

A Quattro Pro tool that enables you to apply predefined formatting schemes to cells in a notebook.
