Hybrid/Multi-pass Radiosity
The next logical step for researchers was to combine radiosity and ray tracing techniques into one single solution. A typical application would take a given geometry with different materials and trace the light from the light sources to the surfaces using ray tracing. It would then select ray tracing to render the specular reflections and transparency effects. Then it would utilize radiosity to render the indirect illumination and diffuse reflections. This would be a typical example of a multi-pass or a hybrid ray tracing/radiosity application.
