Mac OS X may be both remarkably powerful and stable, but there is no such thing as the “perfect” operating system. Therefore, Apple has added an easy-to-use update system that you can use to install the latest bug fixes, operating system improvements, and Apple application updates.

You need an Internet connection to use Panther’s update feature. The update process requires more time if you are using a dial-up modem instead of a broadband connection.

Customize It

You can set Panther to automatically check for updates behind the scenes on a schedule; check the Check for Updates check box and then click the time period drop-down list box to specify the schedule period. If you want Mac OS X to automatically download critical updates as well, check the Download Important Updates in the Background check box; note, however, that updates that are not regarded as critical must still be manually downloaded.
