Chapter 11. Load Balancing

Upon completing this chapter, you will be able to:

  • Explain the purpose of load balancing

  • List the load-balancing techniques and mechanisms supported by Ethernet, IP, Fibre Channel (FC), Internet Small Computer System Interface (iSCSI), Fibre Channel Protocol (FCP), and Fibre Channel over TCP/IP (FCIP)

  • Describe some of the key characteristics of each load-balancing technique and mechanism supported by Ethernet, IP, FC, iSCSI, FCP, and FCIP

  • Differentiate between the methods of load balancing with Dynamic Multi-Pathing (DMP) software

This chapter provides a brief introduction to the principles of load balancing. We briefly discuss the load-balancing functionality supported by Ethernet, IP, FC, iSCSI, FCP, and FCIP, and the techniques employed by end nodes.
