Select the text to which you want to apply a shading effect, open the Format menu, and select Borders and Shading.
On the Borders and Shading dialog box that appears, click the Shading tab and review the available colors in the Fill area.
Click the fill color you want to apply to the background of the selected text for example, Gray-10% and click the OK button.
The shading is applied.
INTRODUCTION
Shading your text is similar to highlighting it, in that the text you select ends up with the selected shading in the background. When you apply shading, however, you can choose from specific patterns and various shading coverage percentages (although this task focuses on the colors available in the Fill section of the Shading tab).
TIP
More Colors
Click the More Colors button on the Shading tab to choose from more color options on the Colors dialog box. There are also additional colors on the Standard tab, or you can create your own colors on the Custom tab.
