Sony MEX-R5
Another cool thing about the MEX-R5 is that it handles just about any disc format you can throw at it. Audio CDs, CD-Rs, CD-RWs, MP3 discs, DVDs, DVD-Rs, DVD-RWs, DVD+Rs, DVD+RWs you name it, the MEX-R5 can play it. And the unit features electronic shock protection with a 12-second memory buffer, so rough roads shouldn't interrupt your listening pleasure. The MEX-R5 also delivers in the sound department. The amplifier delivers 52 watts per channel across four channels, and the Burr-Brown digital-to-analog converter (with full 24-bit resolution) provides superb CD playback. You can even tailor the sound to your personal liking via the built-in seven-band equalizer. And if you want to add satellite radio now or later, the unit is XM ready. In terms of style, the MEX-R5 is somewhat minimalist. There are only a few buttons, with most of the space given over to the huge display (with removable anti-theft faceplate). That's okay, because the display makes it easy to read the ID3 tags on your MP3 discs. Operation is facilitated with the wireless remote (great for the folks in the rear seat), and the unit offers the now-obligatory dual-zone capability. Bottom line, this is one fine-looking and fine-sounding audio system, with the added benefit of wireless DVD playback. As I said, pretty cool.
Pioneer DEH-P80MPPioneer's DEH-P80MP sounds as good as it looks, which is saying a lot; the deep blue organic electroluminescent display is pretty darned cool-looking it can even display screensaver movies, animations, and pictures. The unit plays audio CDs, CD-Rs, CD-RWs, and MP3 and WMA discs, and displays disc ID3 tags. The seven-way Rotary Commander makes it easy to operate the thing, and the DEH-P80MP is both XM and SIRIUS satellite radio ready.

Panasonic CQ-CB8901UThis Panasonic unit is one of the first car audio systems to offer the new high-definition HD Radio technology. If you have an HD Radio station in your area, you get digital reception that makes AM stations sound like FM, and FM stations sound like CDs.
