Word Count

The word count feature counts the pages, words, characters, paragraphs, and lines in a selection or the entire document.

Tip

  • The word count feature is especially useful for writers who often have word count limitations or get paid by the word.

To count pages, words, characters, paragraphs, & lines

1.

If necessary, select the text that you want to count.

2.

Choose Tools > Word Count (Figure 13) to display the Word Count dialog (Figure 30).

After a moment, complete count figures appear.

3.

To include footnotes and endnotes in the count, turn on the Include footnotes and endnotes check box.

4.

When you are finished working with the count figures, click OK to dismiss the dialog.

Tips

  • If you select text before opening the Word Count dialog, Word only counts the words, characters, etc. in the selection.

  • Word displays word count information in the status bar at the bottom of the document window (Figure 31). Clicking this display opens the Word Count dialog.
