Hyphenation

Word's hyphenation feature can hyphenate words so they fit better on a line. Word can hyphenate the words in your documents automatically as you type or manually when you have finished typing.

Tips

  • Hyphenation helps prevent ragged right margins in left-aligned text and large gaps between words in full-justified text. I tell you about alignment in Chapter 3.

  • To prevent text from being hyphenated, select it and then turn on the Don't hyphenate option in the Line and Page Breaks pane of the Paragraph dialog (Figure 27). I explain the options in the Paragraph dialog in Chapter 3.

Figure 27. Use the Line and Page Breaks pane of the Paragraph dialog to prevent hyphenation in selected paragraphs.

To set hyphenation options

1.

Choose Tools > Hyphenation (Figure 13) to display the Hyphenation dialog (Figure 28).

2.

Set options as desired:

  • Automatically hyphenate document enables automatic hyphenation as you type. (By default, this option is turned off.)

  • Hyphenate words in CAPS hyphenates words entered in all uppercase letters, such as acronyms.

  • Hyphenation zone is the distance from the right indent within which you want to hyphenate the document. The lower the value you enter, the more words are hyphenated.

  • Limit consecutive hyphens to is the maximum number of hyphens that can appear in a row.

3.

Click OK.

Tip

  • To remove hyphenation inserted with the automatic hyphenation feature, turn off the Automatically hyphenate document check box in the Hyphenation dialog (Figure 28).

To manually hyphenate text

1.

Follow steps 1 and 2 on the previous page to open the Hyphenation dialog (Figure 28) and set options. Be sure to leave the Automatically hyphenate document check box turned off.

2.

Click the Manual button. Word begins searching for hyphenation candidates. When it finds one, it displays the Manual Hyphenation dialog (Figure 29).

3.

Do one of the following:

  • To hyphenate the word at the recommended break, click Yes.

  • To hyphenate the word at a different break, click the hyphen at the desired break and then click Yes. (The hyphen that you click must be to the left of the margin line.)

  • To continue without hyphenating the word, click No.

4.

Word continues looking for hyphenation candidates. It displays the Manual Hyphenation dialog for each one. Repeat step 3 until the entire document has been hyphenated.

Tips

  • To hyphenate only part of a document, select the part that you want to hyphenate before following the above steps.

  • You can also manually insert two types of special hyphens within words:

    • Press to insert an optional hyphen, which only breaks the word when necessary. Use this to manually hyphenate a word without using the Manual Hyphenation dialog.

    • Press to insert a non-breaking hyphen, which displays a hyphen but never breaks the word.
