Saving Web Page Files


Word offers two options for saving Web page files:

  • Save a Word documenteither created with a Web page template or as a regular Word documentas a Web page.

  • Save a Web page as a regular Word document.

Tip

  • Detailed instructions for using the Save As dialog are provided in Chapter 2.


To save a document as a Web page

1.

Choose File > Save as Web Page (Figure 1) to display the Save As dialog (Figure 27).

Use the dialog to enter a name and select a disk location for the file.

Make sure Web Page (HTML) is chosen from the Format pop-up menu.

Select one of the radio buttons to specify how the Web page should be saved:

  • Save entire file into HTML saves all properties of the document, including Word-specific elements that don't display on the Web. Use this option if the document contains headers, comments, footnotes, or other elements you want to retain.

  • Save only display information into HTML saves only the information that will display on the Web. This discards all Word-specific elements.

To specify a page title for the Web page, click the Web Options button. Then enter a page title and keywords in the General pane of the Web Options dialog that appears (Figure 28) and click OK.

Click Save.

Tips

  • A Web page title is the text that appears in the title bar of a Web browser.

  • When Word saves a document as a Web page, it creates a folder named filename_files (Figure 29) that contains image files that are part of the Web page. When copying Web pages to a directory on a Web server to make them available on the Internet or an intranet, be sure to include the Web page file and this folder of associated image files.

To save a Web page as a Word document

1.

With a Web page open, choose File > Save As (Figure 1) to display the Save As dialog (Figure 30).

2.

Use the dialog to enter a name and select a disk location for the file.

3.

Make sure Word Document is chosen from the Format pop-up menu.

4.

Click Save.
