12.1. Enabling GUI Scripting

In a fresh installation of Mac OS X, GUI Scripting is turned off. It's easy to turn it on, thoughand you have to do that before running any of the scripts in this chapter.

Here's how to enable GUI Scripting:

1. Open System Preferences Universal Access.

   This System Preference pane is where you can turn on various accessibility features of Mac OS X. It also happens to be where you can turn on GUI Scripting.

2. Click "Enable access for assistive devices."

   This is the master switch for GUI Scripting on your Mac (Figure 12-1).

   

   Figure 12-1. "Assistive devices," in Apple jargon, simply means, "programs that can help automate a Mac's interface." GUI Scripting fits right into this category.

   
   

3. If your Mac presents an Authenticate dialog box, enter your user name and password.

   Click OK to dismiss the dialog box.

Now you're free to use GUI Scripting to your heart's content.
