In the previous project we imposed a degree of swing onto an audio file. Can we now apply that same swing feel to our MIDI tracks? Yes, but first, we need to program a simple drum pattern similar to the one in the audio file.
Follow these steps:
On Track 2, sequence this simple drum pattern (Figures P15.1, P15.2 and P15.3). Keep it straight and quantize to 16A if necessary.
Select the Audio Region on Track 1 and in the Sample Editor open the Quantize window [Factory > Audio to MIDI Groove Template ...]. Two things happpen. The Quantize window opens and three new fields labeled Audio Qua, Basis Qua and Result Qua appear at the bottom of the Sample Editor (Figure P15.4).
Select Drums Mid from the Instrument Type flip menu. This gives us template parameters suitable for this particular loop.
In the Basis Qua box select 'off (3840).' This is where you can add extra quantization points. Select one if you want; it will not alter the audio quantization points already selected. It just adds more.
Switch off the Search Zero Crossings option in the Edit menu.
Click Try, to do just that. Click Use and the new template (drumkit6.aif) will appear, along with all the other quantize settings, in the Quantize flip menu. Only for this song though!
In the Sequence Parameters box, toggle between the new groove value, Qua drumkit.aif and Qua off (3840) to A B the result (Figure P15.5). They're quite different.
Save Song compare to project15/15.1.
