Chapter 8 -- Managing Microsoft SQL Server Services

3 4

Chapter 8

As soon as you get Microsoft SQL Server 2000 installed, you can begin using it. But before you can log on and begin building your database, you must know how to start up the SQL Server service and its components—SQL Server Agent, Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator, and Microsoft Search. This chapter describes these components, which run as separate services in addition to the SQL Server service. The chapter also shows you how to start, stop, and manage these services using three tools—SQL Server Service Manager, SQL Server Enterprise Manager, and Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Control Manager.

NOTE

This chapter focuses on running SQL Server 2000 on Microsoft Windows 2000, although it also runs on Microsoft Windows NT 4. SQL Server runs as an executable file on Microsoft Windows 98, which does not support services.

It's important that you know how to manage the SQL Server service using Enterprise Manager. Note that this chapter gives a mere introduction to Enterprise Manager. Many tasks that you can accomplish with Enterprise Manager will be shown, as they apply, in the remaining chapters. These tasks include creating databases and objects, configuring server options, configuring and managing replication, and managing backups. Here we will focus on using Enterprise Manager to manage the SQL Server service and other services.
