When you order prints from a professional photo lab, you're generally offered package deals where you can choose from multiple sizes of prints. To make the deal more economical, the lab lays out the different photo sizes on as few sheets of photo paper as possible, minimizing waste. The Organizer gives you similar optionsthe difference here being, of course, that you'll be doing the printing yourself. A picture package enables you to make maximum use of store-bought premium photo paper (generally 8 1/2" x 11") so that you can print wall-, table-, and wallet-size photos of the same image or of multiple images, all at the same time. Some sizes may be rotated 90 degrees on the printed page to make room for other sizes. The program leaves enough margin between photos for you to cut between them with scissors.

KEY TERM

Picture package Multiple copies of one or more photographs, printed on a single sheet of paper, using standard print sizes such as 8.5" x 11", 5" x 7", and wallet.

1.

Select Images to Print

In the Organizer, press Shift and click the first image in the group you want to print, and then click the last image in the contiguous group. Alternatively, click the first thumbnail, then press Ctrl and click each additional image you want to print.

TIP

Organizer prints all currently displayed images and video thumbnails. If you want to display a group of related images such as all the images from your last vacation, use the Find bar first. (See 33 About Finding Items in the Catalog.) If the catalog is sorted by batch or folder, you can click the gray bar above a group to select all the items in that group. With either of these two methods, you might also end up selecting audio and creation files, but they'll be automatically excluded from the print job.

2.

Click Print Photos Button

Click the Print photos button on the Shortcuts bar and click Print from the menu that appears. You can also select File, Print from the menu. You might see a warning telling you that your selection contains creations and audio files that will not be printed; click OK. You might also see a warning box listing images or video thumbnails of low resolution, and therefore, low print quality. Click OK to dismiss the warning and continue. The Print Selected Photos dialog box appears (for a better look at this dialog box, check out the Color Gallery.

3.

Set Up Printer

If you have more than one printer, select your photo printer from the Select Printer list. Then click the Show Printer Preferences button to display the Properties dialog box for your printer. In this dialog box, you can select the type of photo paper you're using and the print quality you desire. See 65 Set Print Options for help. Click OK after making your selections to return to the Print Photos dialog box.

NOTES

If you don't want to include a low-resolution image in the picture package, you can remove it from printing in step 4, or you can Cancel printing altogether.

To avoid accidentally printing images with low-quality, resize them if needed to fit the print size you want to use. See 60 Change Image Size or Resolution.

To select the ICC printer profile you want to use for printing, click the More Options button and select the profile from the More Options dialog box that appears. If you have installed an ICC color profile made just for your printer or for the paper you're using, you will see best results by choosing that ICC profile from this list and disabling printer color management through the printer driver, whose icon is located in the Windows Control Panel. In the absence of a printer color profile, try choosing Adobe RGB, again with the printer driver's color management turned off. Whatever you do, do not choose your monitor's color profile (the one you created using Adobe Gamma) from this list, because you are trying to select the color spectrum intended for your printer, not your monitor. See 105 Ensure That What You See Is What You Get. Click OK to return to the Print Photos dialog box again.

4.

Select Picture Package

Open the Select Type of Print drop-down list and select Picture Package. The selected images are arranged in the standard package: one 5" x 7", two 2.5" x 3.5", and four wallet prints, on as many pages as needed to print all the images you've selected. To review the images on other pages, use the left and right arrows below the preview window.

If you accidentally included an image you don't want to print such as a low-resolution image, select it from the pane on the far left side of the dialog box and press the Delete key or click the Remove Selected Items button (the trash can). This action does not remove the image from the catalog, just from the current print job. To add an image for printing, click the Add button on the bottom of the left pane, check the images to add from the Add Photos dialog box, and click OK. You're returned to the Print Selected Photos dialog box, where the images you added are included in the left pane.

TIP

You can drag and drop images from the strip on the left side of the dialog box to fill any vacancies in the picture package layout. If a picture was placed on the layout in a size you don't want it to be, just drag a different photo onto that location in the preview window.

5.

Set Layout Options

To select a different picture package, open the Select a Layout list and choose the picture package layout you want to use. This list features all the layout possibilities for your current printer paper size. Each entry in the list shows the quantity and size of the images that will be printed per page. For example, if your paper size is listed as 4" x 6", you might see entries such as 2.1" x 2.8" or 4" x 6".

NOTE

If you choose a print size larger than your paper size (for example, if you choose 5" x 7" print size when you're using 4" x 6" paper), the image will be enlarged to the print size you select and then cropped to fit the paper size. The selected images are automatically laid out to fit the size and positions described in the picture package you choose.

You can add a picture frame border around each image by choosing one from the Select a Frame list.

To print each photo multiple times, using the picture package layout you've chosen, check the One Photo Per Page option.

To crop photos so that they exactly fit the photo sizes you've selected, check the Crop to Fit option. (This option is not available with all layouts.)

NOTE

The Organizer crops equal amounts of content from opposite sides of an image where necessary for certain sizes to make that image fit the proportions of that size. For certain packages, you might notice that some sizes are cropped more than others.
