Extensible Markup Language (XML)

An extensible markup language that allows you to create documents with structured content. XML is extensible because, unlike the fixed Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), it allows you to extend it to suit a wide variety of needs. Indeed, XML is a metalanguage that allows you to build your own markup languages for communicating structured content. XML is an application profile of the Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML) defined by ISO 8879, which means, roughly speaking, that XML is a subset of SGML.
