Summary

Many personal portals today are based on individual interests. These sites are primarily informational, and relatively simple in their composition and content.

The personal portals of tomorrow will be the home servers that interface with friends, business colleagues, and the emerging home automation market. Peer-to-peer technologies offer the most promising approach to realizing this vision.

Publishing in your personal content space requires updating the repository with metadata. Our example demonstrated metadefinitions developed by the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative (DMCI).

The major components used in this example include the Tomcat Servlet Engine and the Jini services, including reggie, mahalo, and JavaSpaces.

By allowing content to remain distributed and providing other users access to your portal, a wide array of peer-to-peer applications become viable. We've only scratched the surface.
