| In this chapter, we will explore common administrative tasks specifically for managing a SharePoint Portal Server. Some of the tasks that we will discuss within this chapter are covered in more detail in other chapters. For example, Chapter 9 discusses managing the workspace, which is considered a more detailed granular administration task within the context of managing the server. Because of this, we have created a separate chapter specifically for all the tasks associated with managing the workspace. Chapter 10 discusses processes and procedures for managing folders and documents, and Chapter 19 discusses detailed tasks for managing indexing. As you can see, all of these tasks could be classified as activities that are applicable to the management of a server. However, due to the amount of detailed information on these sub-tasks, we decided that many of these tasks required their own chapter. Chapter 8 will discuss server-specific management tasks available within the server properties page of the SharePoint Portal Server administrative tools. Examples of the types of administrative tasks we will discuss include how to access the General property page to adjust Index and Search resource usage, specifying the various methods of configuring SharePoint Portal Server with Microsoft Proxy Server, configuring load options and specifying site hit frequency rules, changing the location of data store log and property store files, configuring SharePoint Portal Server to integrate with Lotus Notes by configuring the protocol handler, and how to start and stop the SharePoint Portal Server services. In addition, we will discuss advanced topics such as using IFilters, editing the noise word file, editing the thesaurus, and more. |
