Chapter 3: Attitude: Staying Positive From Start to Finish

This may shock you, but I believe the single most significant decision I can make on a day-to-day basis is my choice of attitude. It is more important than my past, my education, my bankroll, my successes or failures, fame or pain, what other people think of me or say about me, my circumstances, or my position. Attitude is that single string that keeps me going or cripples my progress. It alone fuels my fire or assaults my hope. When my attitudes are right, there's no barrier too high, no valley too deep, no dream too extreme, no challenge too great for me.

What Is Attitude?

Attitude is defined as the mental position you take regarding a fact or a state. This means it's not what you look at that counts, but how you look at it. It's not what you hear, but how you hear it. It's not what you think, but how you think it. Your attitude forms every moment of your day, whether you realize it or not. Out of your attitude comes your enjoyment of life and your gratitude for all your blessings; out of attitude also comes your disappointment and anger at how things have turned out. Out of your attitude comes your productivity and satisfaction from accomplishments small and large. Out of attitude also comes the feeling that no accomplishment will ever be good enough.

There are some circumstances in life we can change; there are many we cannot. When we are faced with situations we must accept, we have two choices: We can live in disappointment, bitterness, and anger, or we can look deep within ourselves, find that place that won't be crushed by circumstance, and then pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and start all over again.

A positive attitude is not a phony smile, a happy face, and a perky disposition. It is simply a way of responding to life in a manner that allows us to accept the things we cannot change, and change the things we can. A positive attitude enables you to make a difference in the world because when you are able to see things in a positive light, you help others see the light as well.

A great attitude does much more than turn on the lights in our worlds; it seems to magically connect us to all sorts of serendipitous opportunities that were somehow absent before the change.
