You can turn the Side Note window into a full OneNote window at any time by clicking the maximize button on the Side Note window. You can also position your mouse at one of the corners of the Side Note window and drag to make the note larger. As soon as the Side Note gets large enough, it turns into a full OneNote window with the normal toolbars, page headings, and page tabs. You don't have to cause the Side Note window to fill the screen, just make it slightly bigger, as shown in Figure 8.8. Figure 8.8. A Side Note can easily turn into a full-sized note. tip | You can create a new Side Note and begin recording audio directly from the system tray icon. Just right-click the icon and choose Start Recording Audio. OneNote opens a new Side Note window and starts recording your audio note. To stop the recording, close the Side Note or click the stop button on the Side Note toolbar. |
Turning a Side Note into a Standard Note Within the Side Note window, you can move an existing Side Note into another note section. For example, you might be using OneNote to take notes during business meetings. Another meeting participant calls you on the phone and wants to discuss the agenda for the next meeting. You quickly launch a Side Note and record the phone conversation. But later, you want to move that note from the Side Notes section to the Meeting section. While you have the Side Note open, use the following steps. Click the third Side Note toolbar button, Move Page To. Choose Another Section to display the Move or Copy Pages dialog box shown in Figure 8.9. Figure 8.9. You can move your Side Note to any other section or create a new section. Choose the section you want to hold your Side Note. You can create a new section or a new folder to house the note by clicking the appropriate button in the dialog box. Once you choose the destination section, the Move and Copy buttons will activate. Click either Move or Copy. Clicking Move removes the page from the Side Notes section and moves it to the destination section. Clicking Copy places a copy in the destination section while leaving the original in the Side Notes section. If you move an existing Side Note page to another section, you're returned to the last Side Note page created. If you choose Copy, you return to the Side Note window. Moving or copying pages preserves the page exactly as you created it in the Side Notes window. All audio recordings are preserved and moved with the rest of the page. caution | If you attempt to move a note container that contains an audio recording by copying and pasting it, the text within the note container will move, but the audio recording will not. You should not use this method to move audio recordings. |
Combining Side Notes As previously mentioned, every time you create a new Side Note, you're actually creating a new page within the Side Note section. If you want to combine some of these pages, you can do so within the main OneNote window. Unfortunately there is no easy way to combine two pages into one, but you can drag and drop or cut and paste note containers from one page to another using the following steps. Open the main OneNote window. Click on the Side Notes section. Click on the page tab for the Side Note page you want to delete. To select all note containers on this page, press Ctrl+A or choose Select All from the Edit menu. Press Ctrl+X (or click the Cut button) to place the selected note containers on the clipboard. Click the Side Note page you want to keep from the page tabs on the right of the screen. Press Ctrl+V (or click the Paste button) to paste your note containers on the existing page. Right-click the page tab for the page you want to delete. Choose Delete from the context menu. You can use this method to combine information on any two OneNote pages, whether they are Side Notes or other pages within OneNote. Remember, if you have audio in a note container you're copying, only the text is copied. The linked audio file isn't copied. The Absolute Minimum In this chapter, you learned how to create Side Notes, a smaller version of a full note. You learned about Launching a new Side Note Adding text and audio to Side Notes Accessing Side Notes from the main OneNote window Moving information between Side Notes and other OneNote sections In the next chapter, we'll cover the various ways you can organize your OneNote information. Once you use OneNote for a few notes, you'll probably end up with a lot of information that's not organized very well. We'll cover the various ways you can organize your information and how you can best use elements of OneNote's structure to organize that information. |
