Lab 6.4: Installing a CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW, or DVD Drive

Most new software comes on CD-ROM discs. So, a computer without a CD-ROM drive cannot use the new software that is available. For best performance, the CD-ROM drive should be connected as the master drive on the secondary IDE interface controller, and the boot drive (drive C:) should be connected as the master drive on the primary IDE interface controller.

Upon completion of this lab, you will be able to:

  • Install a CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW, or DVD drive in a Windows system

  • Install the software required to support the CD-ROM drive

Set Up

For this exercise, you will need:

  • A working Windows 9x computer with an IDE interface hard drive

  • An IDE interface CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW, or DVD drive

  • Mounting hardware for the CD-ROM drive

  • A Windows 98 startup disk

  • A CD-ROM driver disk

Exercise

In this lab, you will install an IDE (ATAPI) interface CD-ROM drive. Sometimes, the sound card CD-ROM controller is used; however, in this lab, you will connect to the primary IDE interface or to the secondary IDE interface.

Installing a Windows CD-ROM Drive in a One-Port System

To install a Windows CD-ROM drive in a one-port system,

  1. Set the hard-drive jumpers to the master position. The jumper positions are usually documented on the drive. If you are not installing a new hard drive or CD-ROM, you will need to remove them first.

  2. Set the CD-ROM drive jumpers to the slave position. The jumper positions are usually documented on the drive.

  3. Mount the CD-ROM drive in the drive bay.

  4. Connect the second port on the hard-drive IDE cable to the CD-ROM drive. Be sure to connect the striped edge of the ribbon cable to pin 1 of the CD-ROM drive.

  5. Connect the power cable to the CD-ROM drive.

  6. Boot the computer to the Desktop and look for the CD-ROM drive in My Computer.

  7. If the CD-ROM icon does not appear in My Computer, use the following sequence to install the CD-ROM drive:

    Control Panel Add New Hardware

If the CD-ROM icon still does not appear in My Computer, go back to step 1.

  8. For Windows versions other than Windows XP, you will probably be asked to insert a device driver disk to enable features other than reading a CD.

Installing a Windows CD-ROM Drive in a Two-Port System

To install a Windows CD-ROM drive in a two-port system,

  1. Obtain an IDE ribbon cable and connect it to the second IDE port. Do not disturb the first IDE port or the hard drive(s) attached to it. Be sure to connect the striped edge of the ribbon cable to pin 1 of the IDE port.

  2. Set the CD-ROM drive jumpers to the master position.

  3. Mount the CD-ROM drive in the drive bay.

  4. Connect the second IDE port cable to the CD-ROM drive. Be sure to connect the striped edge of the ribbon cable to pin 1 of the CD-ROM drive.

  5. Connect the power cable to the CD-ROM drive.

  6. Boot the computer and look for the CD-ROM drive in My Computer.

  7. If the CD-ROM icon does not appear in My Computer, use the following sequence to install the CD-ROM drive:

    Control Panel Add New Hardware

If the CD-ROM icon still does not appear in My Computer, go back to Step 1.

  8. For Windows versions other than Windows XP, you will probably be asked to insert the device driver disk to enable features other than reading a CD.
