Chapter 9: Document Management

Overview

This chapter is the first of two chapters dedicated to helping you understand how to implement a formal method of managing documents using Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007. This chapter focuses on document management. The next chapter focuses on records management. Chapter 11, "Web Content Management and Publishing Features," will focus on Web content management. Together, these three topics form what Microsoft calls Enterprise Content Management (ECM). ECM is one of the main investment areas for Microsoft in this release of Office SharePoint Server 2007.

The document tracking and editing features of SharePoint Server 2007 provide you with a rich set of tools for managing documents within your organization. This chapter explores the capabilities of SharePoint Server 2007 as a collaborative system for creating, managing, and revising documents.
