The very new IEEE 802.11j task group has begun to work out some details of the media access control and physical layers for 5 GHz wireless networking so that the American 802.11a standard and the European and Japanese HIPERLAN/2 standard may coexist and eventually converge. Unless you're a manufacturer looking to develop gear to operate at 5 GHz worldwide, there's not much of interest here. Regulatory issues (see 802.11h) must be solved before anything will come of this effort.
