Explain Twice, Succeed Once

Overview

Ninety percent of Wi-Fi security consists of enabling Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP), a standard Wi-Fi feature available in every Wi-Fi certified wireless LAN product available today. Other standard features are simply refinements on WEP. Additional, non-standard security features are possible-but they introduce complications, incompatibilities, and additional expense. The most secure among them, like virtual private networks, require access to 'the other end of the pipe' (typically a server at one's place of employment) and are not automatically available to just anyone.

On the other hand, WEP security is not as flimsy as much of the press (few of whom have any technical training and fewer of whom seem to care about their own ignorance) have made it sound.

If you haven't read the previous chapter on Wired Equivalent Privacy yet, I think it would be good to do so before you proceed. Understanding what it is and how it works (as well as how it fails) may allow the following instructions to make more sense.
