The preceding paragraphs have described the basics of virtual memory management, paging, and swapping. As might be expected, paging and swapping can impose a significant amount of overhead on a system. This section will briefly describe some of the OpenVMS components involved in paging and some techniques employed to reduce memory-management overhead.
Before examining the specifics of paging, some terminology associated with virtual-memory techniques must be introduced. After that, paging will be examined with the focus first on a single process, then on the entire system.
