Section 11: Invest in Understanding Yourself

Overview

Thomas was raised according to his parents’ values and never really delved into self-understanding until he reached his thirties. At that point, he started getting a sense that there was a deeper purpose to his existence on the planet, beyond contributing to his employer and providing for his family.

He began a wonderful journey of discovery into spirituality, philosophy, and introspection. He hired a personal coach who helped him explore some goals that had been floating around in his mind for a number of years. One of these goals was to create sculpture. This exercised his creative energy in ways that would touch people emotionally.

Thomas explored changing careers, but he decided the government agency where he worked provided some opportunities to explore art. After about a year of laying the groundwork and investigating possibilities, he got a job supporting a museum. This was one giant step closer to creating his own works because he could associate with artisans who understood and supported him. At the same time, he was able to continue a decent income to support his family.

Thomas is happier than he’s ever been. He‘s exploring and learning something new every day. He’s not sure where he’ll be in ten years, but he now has the flexibility to move in a number of different directions depending on opportunities that may arise.

Self-understanding is key to everything else in this section. If you do not understand yourself, then you will not be able to focus on the things that will bring you deep satisfaction.

A surprising range of resources and tools are available to explore your inner self: books, assessments, counselors and coaches, seminars, even close friends. It does not take a lot of money. It does take time and focus. And you will continue to discover more about yourself as you change and grow over time. This is a lifelong journey.

You might choose to approach your journey of self-discovery in many ways. You might ask yourself the following questions.

  • Who is my true self?

  • Why was I put here?

  • What skills and abilities have I accumulated?

  • What gifts have I been given?

  • What is my niche?

  • What is the one thing I want to accomplish in my life?

  • What would give my life value?

Answers to any of these questions can bring great insight if you approach them honestly and openly. The key is to find an approach that gives you the most insight. Do not be surprised if it takes you in unexpected directions!

Too many people die with their music still inside them.
