Summary

Malware is one of the biggest (and yet least appreciated) threats to the security and privacy of Windows Vista systems and users. With an estimated 9 out of 10 Windows systems infected by malware in some form or another, it's critically important for all users to scan for and remove any existing threats present on Windows Vista systems, and then take the necessary steps to avoid future infections.

Remember the following points when it comes to keeping your Windows Vista system free of malware-related threats:

  • Install anti-spyware software that includes real-time protection. Keep it updated, and then scan for malware threats regularly.

  • Install a firewall that offers both inbound and outbound packet filtering capabilities to stop malware threats from phoning home.

  • Keep your system up to date by installing all of the latest security updates and patches.

  • Don't underestimate the need to have both anti-virus and anti-spyware software installed on your PC simultaneously. These programs complement (rather than conflict with) one another.

  • Consider installing more than one anti-spyware tool-a second opinion never hurts!

  • Ensure that Internet Explorer is properly secured, or switch to an alternative web browser like Firefox, Opera, or Netscape.

  • Be careful what you click, and stay away from shady web sites-what appears to be a simple banner or dialog box may actually be the gateway to infecting your Windows Vista system with another malware threat.
