The curves and surfaces in this book are based on some fairly complex mathematics, so I've decided to begin with two chapters that briefly lay the mathematical foundation for some of the later ideas. I expect this will be review for many people, and many of the more knowledgeable people will notice that there are areas where I only skim the surface.
If you are already comfortable with trigonometry and calculus, you can probably skip these first few chapters. However, I suggest skimming them just to get a feel for how I present things.
If these concepts are new to you, read these first two chapters and the appendixes. They will definitely help in understanding the rest of the book. As you read, remember that I am giving you the pieces that you need to understand a handful of concepts, but these are by no means complete explanations of algebra, trigonometry, and calculus. That would require several books of this size . To dig deeper into the math, I strongly suggest college-level courses in calculus and beyond.
