Chapter 3. Hitting the Road with Wi-Fi

In this chapter

  • Introducing Wi-Fi PC Cards

  • Finding a Wi-Fi hotspot

  • Paying for your Wi-Fi access

  • Connecting at Starbucks

One thing that is great fun to do with Wi-Fi is to connect to the Internet from a remote location such as a hotel lobby or a coffee shop. If you are on a business trip, this kind of wireless connection is not only fun and convenient, but it can help you be more productive by using your time more efficiently. The ability to connect via wireless on the road lets you pick up email, and surf for information, when you need it on your own time.

The good news is that there is no great trick to connecting remotely via Wi-Fi.

This chapter shows you how to hit the road with Wi-Fi, even if the road is only your nearby Borders bookstore or Starbucks latte emporium!

I won't go into too many gory details at this point because I can't do everything at once, but don't worry if things don't seem quite as simple to you as they are made out to be in this chapter. There's plenty of more in-depth material later on in this book, and in this chapter I'll point you to the right place to find more detailed information on the topics covered.
