11.10 Nondelivery monitoring

 < Day Day Up >

The Exchange administrator should perform proactive nondelivery monitoring on the messaging environment to quickly identify problems that may prove to be systemic. It is always advisable to identify and solve problems before they affect large numbers of users.

Responsibility for monitoring nondelivery reports (NDRs) should be delegated to the administrators who are responsible for the service where the NDR is created. For example, the administrator who is responsible for mail at the firewall should monitor Internet mail NDRs.

If the administrator notices that certain types of NDRs are regularly repeated, the trend may indicate that there is a problem with the messaging infrastructure. The problems also could indicate that the users do not understand how to use the system. For example, certain users may not understand how to address messages to Internet users. Whether the NDRs are caused by a faulty infrastructure or by faulty use of the system, the Exchange administrator should take corrective action.
