Q1:

What can I do with the Lock controls?

A1:

As the name suggests, you can lock certain aspects of a layer. Here are the options (from left to right in the Layers palette):

  • Lock Transparent Pixels : Only lets you paint or apply filters to the pixels already on the layerthe transparent areas are locked and cannot be changed. You can still move the content of the layer.

  • Lock Image Pixels : You cannot alter the look of pixels on the layeronly move them.

  • Lock Position : You can do anything to the pixels except move them.

  • Lock All : The layer is completely lockednothing can be changed.

Q2:

Is there a quick way to lock a bunch of layers? Can I do this other than one at a time?

A2:

Yes, select the layers (by Shift-clicking or Command-clicking [PC: Control-clicking] on them), then from the Layers palette's flyout choose Lock Layers.

Q3:

Is there a quick way to turn the Lock commands on and off?

A3:

Select your layer(s) and press the Forward Slash key (/) to turn the Lock functions on and off. If any Lock function is already checked, this shortcut will turn that function on and off. If nothing has been locked, this shortcut will toggle on and off the Lock Transparent Pixels and Lock Position functions.
