Appendix B: Additional Tools and Resources


This appendix provides a brief description, installation steps, and usage guidelines for the tools provided on the companion CD-ROM. These tools and samples are installed by default to the folder C:\Microsoft Press\Excel Data Analysis\Extras. (For more information about the companion CD-ROM, see the section “Using the Accompanying CD” in the introduction to the book.) This appendix also describes tools and add-ins available on the Microsoft Web site (http://www.microsoft.com). You can download these tools from the Web pages listed to augment the data analysis capabilities of the Microsoft Office applications you use in your organization.

CD Extras

The following data analysis samples and learning tools are available on the book’s companion CD-ROM.

Data Analyzer 3.5 Tutorial

This interactive tutorial introduces the concepts behind Microsoft Data Analyzer version 3.5 and teaches you how to become a proficient user. (The tutorial is also available at http://office.microsoft.com/downloads/2002/datutor.aspx.)

Installation and Use

  1. Double-click the file datutor.exe in the Extras folder.

  2. Click Yes to accept the license agreement.

  3. Enter or browse to the location at which you want to copy the tutorial’s installation file; for example, C:\DATutor. Click OK.

  4. Click Yes if prompted to create the folder.

  5. Click OK.

  6. Open the folder you designated in step 3, and then double-click the file datutorial.msi.

  7. Click Next three times through the installation wizard.

  8. Click Close after the installation is complete.

  9. Assuming a default installation path, open the folder Program Files\Microsoft Data Analyzer Tutorial and then double-click the file tutorial.hta to run the tutorial.

Sample PivotTable Reports

These four Excel workbooks contain 25 PivotTable reports and 4 PivotChart reports that you can experiment with. (These samples are also available at http:/ /office.microsoft.com/downloads/2002/Reports.aspx.)

Installation and Use

  1. Double-click the file reports.exe in the Extras folder.

  2. Click Yes, and then click Yes again to accept the license agreement.

  3. Enter or browse to the location at which you want to place the PivotTable reports and PivotChart reports; for example, C:\PVRpts.

  4. Click Yes if prompted.

  5. Click OK.

  6. Open the folder you designated in step 3, and then open any one of the four Excel workbooks.

The article 25 Easy PivotTable Reports referred to in the Excel spreadsheets can be found at Microsoft Office Tools on the Web at http://office.microsoft.com.

Microsoft Office XP Web Component Toolpack

The Office Web Component (OWC) Toolpack includes walkthroughs of Office XP Web Component features, a library of code samples for common OWC tasks, links to the documentation that comes with Office XP, and advanced PivotTable code samples (such as for conditional cell coloring using an add-in and conditional cell coloring using built-in functionality). The OWC Toolpack also includes a drillthrough sample, a server actions sample, and a sample for printing via Excel. The toolpack requires SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services and the Office XP Web Components to be installed on the local computer. (The toolpack is also available at http://msdn.microsoft.com/downloads/default.asp?url=/downloads/sample.asp?url=/MSDN-FILES/027/001/681/ msdncompositedoc.xml&frame=true.)

Installation and Use

  1. Double-click the file offpack.exe in the Extras folder.

  2. Click Next, and then follow the installation wizard to set up the OWC Toolpack on your computer.

  3. Click Close when installation is complete.

  4. By default, the installation wizard creates an item for the toolpack on the Programs menu. Click Start, All Programs, and then Office XP Web Component Toolpack to see a list of options.
