Server Extensions Configuration and Administration

Security is one of the most troublesome topics for many users of FrontPage, likely because a complete understanding of security requires a comprehensive understanding of not only FrontPage Server Extensions implementation, but also of Windows security. This chapter won't teach you everything about Windows security by any means, but it will teach you enough about it for you to understand how FrontPage implements security and how you can manage the security of your Web site. Administration of a Server Extensions Web site is broken down in to three separate areas; site administration, virtual server administration, and server administration.

FrontPage 2003 does not ship with the FrontPage Server Extensions. However, Windows 2000, Windows XP Professional, and Windows Server 2003 all ship with the FrontPage Server Extensions. If you are running Windows 2000 or Windows XP, Internet Information Services includes the FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions. This chapter deals with the FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions, so if you want to follow along with the concepts discussed here, you will need to download and install the latest version of the Server Extensions.

NOTE

Many of the settings and configurations mentioned in this chapter are configurable only by the server administrator. If you are hosting your Web site with a hosting company, you will need to contact your hosting company for changes to these settings.
