Can't Open Site

graphics/troubleshooting_icon.jpg

I'm trying to open an existing Web site, and I enter the Web address into the Open Site option. FrontPage says that FrontPage Server Extensions aren't installed, but I know for a fact that they are. What can I do?

FrontPage will report that FrontPage Server Extensions aren't installed if they don't respond. Many times, the actual problem is that the server is down or the server extensions aren't responding.

If you are getting such a message on a server that you know has FrontPage Server Extensions installed, first check to make sure that the site is actually up. If the site is live, something is wrong with the server extensions, so ask you server administrator to look into it. Sometimes FrontPage Server Extensions will need to be reinstalled.

FrontPage Server Extensions and FTP

I update my site with FrontPage Server Extensions. Other people on my team use other products and want to update site content via FTP. It seems that FrontPage Extensions "break" on a regular basis after this happens. Why is this the case, and what can I do to fix it?

In all honesty, FrontPage Server Extensions and FTP never worked nicely together. Although some will claim that they can make them work together in harmony, I have never been able to make it work. Because Microsoft is no longer updating the FrontPage Extensions product, there is no reason to expect that this issue will be fixed.

The answer is simply picking one protocol and sticking with it. Either require that everyone on your team access site content through FrontPage and the Server Extensions, or embrace FrontPage's new handling of FTP and join the others in your team accordingly.
