Using FrontPage 2003 Web Site Templates

To open or use any of the Web Templates that come with FrontPage 2003, select New from the File menu and then select More Web Site Templates from the New task pane (see Figure 14.2).

Figure 14.2. The New task pane will let you choose from Page or Site templates in addition to searching Office Online for additional template options.

Microsoft has not updated any of the Web Site Templates in this release. Here we will describe, briefly, each of the Web templates that come with the full install of FrontPage 2003:

  • One Page Web Site Just as it sounds, this template provides nothing more than a single page Web site. This is provided to offer a quick and easy way to create a new Web from which you can start a site from scratch.

  • Corporate Presence Wizard This wizard takes you through a series of questions that helps you create a corporate Web site quickly and easily (see Figure 14.3).

Figure 14.3. The Corporate Presence Wizard walks you through the process of building a corporate Web site unique to your situation.

  • Corporate Support Wizard This wizard walks you through the process of getting a limited support site up quickly.

    TIP

If you have access to a Windows SharePoint SharePoint Services Server, the options provided by the Corporate Support, Discussion Web, or Project Web Site Wizards listed later have considerably better options built right in to SharePoint.

For more on FrontPage and SharePoint Team Services, see "Windows SharePoint Services 2.0," p. 943.

  • Database Interface Wizard This wizard has been updated to provide the most powerful wizard of the bunch. This wizard walks you through the process of interfacing with a database for dynamic data and content integration (see Figure 14.4).

Figure 14.4. The updated Database Interface Wizard writes the code needed to integrate with the latest database technology.

For more help in the implementation and use of this wizard, see "FrontPage's Data Toolset," p. 689.

  • Discussion Web Site Wizard Provides a simple discussion Web site.

  • Empty Web Site Sets up all the files necessary for a Web site, but it doesn't even create the first page. This template is used by those who intend on building a site in any scripting language and don't want HTML in their sites.

  • Import Web Site Wizard This is probably the most powerful wizard that comes with FrontPage. The Import Web Site Wizard helps you grab an existing Web site (either on your network or elsewhere on the Web) and import it into a new Web site that you have control over.

    NOTE

Could you use the Import Web Site Wizard to pull Web content from a site that isn't yours? Yes.

You don't need this book to tell you that grabbing someone else's content without their permission isn't legal or ethical.

  • Personal Web Site This template helps you develop a simple personal Web site. Serves as a decent jumping off point for creating a site to tell others about you and your services.

  • Project Web Site With this template, you can put together a Web site that tracks a project.

  • SharePoint Team Site Build a basic SharePoint Team Site using this Wizard.

If you can't get your template to provide you with the functionality you expect it to, see "The Template Doesn't Work" in the "Troubleshooting" section at the end of this chapter.

After the Web template is selected and the appropriate information (if any) is entered, FrontPage will create the entire Web site and place it in your FrontPage Web.

When the new Web is created, you can edit any element of the new site with FrontPage as you would anything created on your own.
