Listing the benefits of mentoring is useful in developing the general argument in favour of the process. There is a deeper reason, however, for developing a clarity about the expected outcomes of any mentoring programme. Where people have high clarity about the organisation's expectations from a mentoring programme, they are more likely to be clear about the objectives of their own relationship, and this, in turn, appears to lead to more productive pairings. As we shall examine in subsequent chapters, knowing what you want out of mentoring is critical to getting what you want!
