Acknowledgments

It would not have been possible to write this book without the work of numerous people and organizations. This book builds on the CMMI Framework developed by the CMMI project, which involved numerous people from different organizations throughout the world. These organizations were using a CMM or multiple CMMs and were interested in the benefits of developing an integrated framework to aid in enterprise-wide process improvement.

Organizations from industry, government, and the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) joined together to develop CMMI. The organizations donated the time of one or more of their people to participate in the CMMI project. Many of those who contributed to CMMI are listed in Appendix C. In particular, we appreciate the leadership and support Jack Ferguson and Mike Phillips provided throughout the CMMI project.

There are a few people we feel need special recognition because of the support they provided during the writing of this book. First of all, we'd like to thank Bill Peterson for encouraging us to write it, his continued support while we were writing the book, and his detailed review comments that helped us to improve it.

We also would like to thank our significant others, Chuck, Patti, and Mark, for supporting our families and us while we were spending the many long hours that were necessary to write this book. We'd also like to thank our children Adam, Pamela, Kevin, Paul, Katie, Alison, David, Walter, and "Abby." There were many times they would rather have had us doing something with them when we just had to be in our offices working. You have our heartfelt thanks for your patience, support, and understanding.

We would also like to thank NASA, United Space Alliance (USA), and especially Julie Bernard who coordinated the writing of the case study for this book. Thanks also to the following people at USA for conducting the case study and providing information about it to us:

  • Tom Peterson, Jim Orr, Mary Burgess, Earl Lee senior management sponsors who provided the enthusiastic support and resources to pursue this activity

  • Julie Bernard, Rich DeBernardo, Johnnie Henderson, Steve Kinstle, Allen Prescott case study team members who learned about CMMI and diligently assessed the projects

Numerous others at USA provided supporting data to the activity for making the case study possible.

We owe our gratitude to the reviewers of this book: Yoshi Akiyama, Julia Allen, Aaron Clouse, Jay Douglass, Jon Gross, Mark Paulk, Mary Lynn Penn, Bill Peterson, Mike Phillips, Karen Richter, Gary Wolf, and others. Their in-depth and insightful comments were invaluable in helping us create a book that conveys our ideas clearly and concisely. A special thanks goes to Addison-Wesley Publishing Partner Peter Gordon for his continued assistance and support and to Joan Flaherty, Ruth Maassen, and Marilyn Rash for their help with the design and final production of this book.

Last, we'd like to especially thank Roger Bate and Mark Paulk, our friends and colleagues, who were there throughout the process with advice, opinions, and knowledge.

During the writing of this book and the publication of CMMI v1.1, we lost a special friend and coworker, Carolyn Tady. Her smile and kindness will be remembered always.
