10.10 Summary

Mission-critical enterprise systems written in Java have become standardized with the release of Sun's Java 2 Enterprise Edition specification and the many compliant application server products from which developers can choose. But enterprise class applications need to be carefully managed. Part of J2EE 1.4 will include the J2EE Management specification (JSR 77), which describes how all J2EE application server products are to be managed. This chapter provided a brief overview of the J2EE application architecture and programming model. Then the J2EE Management specification (JSR 77) was described in detail, along with examples of how the specification works in real-world application server products. We discussed the philosophy behind the J2EE Management specification, along with some of the shortcomings of the current specification. We also looked at code examples of various management functions implemented according to the JSR 77 specification.
