Understanding the Components That are Part of a GroupWise Installation

The GroupWise Windows client has several integration points into your Windows environment and to the applications installed on Windows. During the installation of the GroupWise client, all these integration points need to be connected, based on the already-installed products. Let's have a look at this:

  • MAPI or Windows Messaging System (WMS) is a Microsoft standard that allows GroupWise, and other MAPI-compliant solutions, to send messages from other applications or from the desktop. In more recent versions of Windows, Microsoft has not always included WMS in the basic Windows installation. The GroupWise installation program will detect this and will install WMS automatically from the CLIENT\WIN32\WMS folder; this version of WMS was created by Microsoft and should run on any Windows box.

    Tip

In some cases the WMS can get damaged by the installation of certain versions of Microsoft Office, thereby disabling certain integrations with GroupWise. In most cases a reinstallation of WMS from the CLIENT\WIN32\WMS folder will correct these problems.

  • GroupWise Document Management System (DMS) integration is handled via the ODMA interface, which connects the GroupWise DMS with products like Microsoft Word and WordPerfect. The GroupWise installation routine will automatically detect whether any ODMA solutions are installed, and will enable the DMS integration with these solutions. These applications will then redirect certain procedures to GroupWisefor example, the File, Open and File, Save dialogs. Because not everyone uses GroupWise DMS, these integrations can be turned off during the installation manually or via the setup configuration files. Of course, if you install GroupWise first and then add an ODMA-aware application later, you will need to rerun the GroupWise install to enable DMS integration, if needed.

  • Internet Browser Integration will make sure that whenever a user selects a mail-to link or uses the option Read Mail in the browser this will be automatically redirected to GroupWise. This works with most versions of Internet Explorer and the more modern Mozilla Firefox versions. Like WMS, this is a separate part of the installation routine, located in the CLIENT/WIN32/ADDONS/GWMAILTO folder. This option can be manually enabled or disabled during the installation process or via the setup configuration files.

  • Novell PDA Connect is a new addition to GroupWise that will allow you to synchronize your Palm or PocketPC devices via the cradle with GroupWise. The GroupWise installation routine will automatically detect existing installations of HotSync for Palm or ActiveSync for PocketPC. This will fire off a separate installation routine located in the CLIENT\WIN32\ADDONS\PDACONNECT folder. This routine will disable all the default synchronization options of HotSync or ActiveSync (these are now used only as the communication layer with the device) and will enable the integration with GroupWise. Of course, if you install GroupWise first and then add HotSync or ActiveSync afterward, you will need to rerun the GroupWise install to install PDA Connect, if needed.

  • JAWS is a scripting language used to integrate screen readers with mainstream software like GroupWise. JAWS for Windows contains a built-in scripting language that makes mainstream applications more speech friendly and accessible. GroupWise makes the integration of screen readers more user friendly by offering a JAWS script in the CLIENT\JAWS folder.

  • The new GroupWise Connector for Outlook delivers the option to run Outlook 2003 connected to the strong GroupWise back end, as if connected to an Exchange server. A more complete description of this connector can be found at the end of this chapter; the installation routine is located in the CLIENT\CONNECTOR folder.

Most of these modules and options are integrated into a single installation routine; the preceding overview is an illustration of some of the tasks this routine should take care of.
