Sample Files

The complete code for the samples described in this book can be downloaded as a .zip archive from the book's Web site (http://www.microsoft.com/mspress/books/5728.asp). The archive contains a ReadMe file that describes the organization of the samples and provides directions for installing them for use with Visual Studio .NET as well as with the standalone .NET Framework SDK.

The archive holds the following contents:

  • A ServerControls directory that builds into the MSPress.Server Controls.dll assembly. This assembly contains the samples from Part III of the book.

  • A ServerComponents directory that builds into the MSPress.ServerComponents.dll assembly. This assembly contains the samples from Part IV of the book.

  • A WebControls directory that builds into the MSPress.WebControls.dll assembly. This assembly contains the samples from Part V of the book.

  • A BookWeb directory containing an ASP.NET Web application that contains sample pages that exercise the server controls implemented in the book.

  • An EventsSample directory that builds into the EventsSample.exe assembly. This assembly contains code to demonstrate implementing events, as described in Chapter 3, "Component Programming Overview."

  • A Tools directory that contains two tools: AddXmlMapping.vbs, which is described in Chapter 19, "HTTP Handlers," and EncLicGen.exe, which is described in Chapter 17, "Localization, Licensing, and Other Miscellany."

The archive contains a Visual Studio .NET solution file and corresponding project files that you can use to compile the samples with. In addition, the archive contains a set of batch files that you can use to build the samples by using the .NET Framework SDK alone.

Software Needed to Run the Samples

You will need the .NET Framework SDK on your local machine to compile the sample controls and use them in the sample ASP.NET pages provided in this book. The .NET Framework SDK includes ASP.NET and all the tools you will need to use the samples we have provided. The .NET Framework SDK is free and can be downloaded from http://www.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=77.

ASP.NET requires one of the following operating systems: Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP Professional, or Windows .NET Server. In addition, ASP.NET Web applications run within the Internet Information Services (IIS) Web server.

If you want to use the solution file and related project files we have provided along with the samples, you will need Visual Studio .NET. You can find more information about Visual Studio .NET at http://www.msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio.

If you plan to use the .NET Framework SDK alone, we recommend that you download ASP.NET Web Matrix from http://www.asp.net/webmatrix. Web Matrix is a free ASP.NET Web development tool with a WYSIWYG design-time environment. This tool will enable you to open the sample pages in a design-time environment. Web Matrix also comes with a development Web server you can use instead of IIS if you want to run the samples pages on Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition.
