7.10 Summary

Instant Messaging is a relatively young technology. Like many earlier Internet technologies, it didn't take hackers long to start exploring the weaknesses. The IM industry has responded and closed up many obvious holes as long as the user does not download and run untrusted code. IM will continue to be exploited and IM client and server programs will close the holes as they become aware of them. If you are in charge of a corporation that allows IM, be sure to rewrite your computer security policies to account for IM exploits. Chapter 8 begins a four-chapter discussion on attacks directed toward Internet browsers.
