Chapter Review Questions

1:

Tools like glance and top allow us to monitor processes/threads in a continuous, ever-changing fashion (the data is updated on-screen automatically). Give a reason why the information presented by glance may be regarded as "better" data. Is there anything we could do to improve the quality of data presented by tools such as top ?

2:

HP-UX 11i version 1 on a Superdome has no capability to take advantage of the cc- NUMA features of the Superdome's cell-based architecture. HP-UX 11i version 2 utilizes a concept known as " cell -local memory." Explain what effect utilizing "cell-local memory" has on the scheduling of threads. Can this be advantageous to application performance?

3:

You are looking at using variable page sizes to improve the overall performance of your application. Can the use of variable page sizes really improve the overall performance of individual applications when it is a feature that the operating system uses simply to translate virtual addresses to physical addresses, and will the operating system always adhere to the settings we use? Explain your answer. What hardware/software mechanisms does the operating system use to assist in this process? Finally, which commands do we need to be aware of to implement variable page sizes in individual applications?

4:

Processor Sets are said to offer application isolation. What does "application isolation" relate to and how will it aid (if at all) in application performance? Would there be any simple administrative advantage using Processor Sets with PRM as opposed to using the Processor Sets software in isolation?

5:

Your system is experiencing performance problems. You have been looking at a number of diagnostic tools to try to establish what could be the main cause of concern. Your findings can be categorized as follows :

  1. The system is running with less than 100 percent CPU utilization.

  2. System CPU utilization is in excess of 50 percent.

  3. The operators are telling you that the majority of disks seem to be accessed almost constantly.

  4. Memory utilization is very high.

You realize that your investigations are not as yet complete. With information at your disposal, how would you categorize this performance problem? What would your subsequent investigations focus on?
