Editing Sound in Flash

Flash gives you some rudimentary control over your sounds. You can add simple effects, as well as control the sound type, by using the Sounds panel.

You'll find the available effects in the Effect pop-up menu on the Sound panel. The effects are pretty self-explanatory, but here's a quick recap:

  • None. Indicates that there are no effects applied to the sound. You also can select this option to clear any previous selected effects.

  • Left Channel/Right Channel. Enables you to control the playback of the sound in either the left or right channel.

  • Fade Left to Right/Fade Right to Left. Enables the sound to be shifted from one channel to the other, simulating a pan effect.

  • Fade In/Fade Out. Gradually increases or decreases the volume of the sound.

  • Custom. Enables you to customize your effects using the Edit Envelope.

You've already been introduced to stream and event sound synchronization. There are two additional settings you can choose from the Sync drop-down menu:

  • Start is similar to Event. The main difference between the two is that each time a Start sound is introduced, it plays to the end before it can play again. This is useful if you have a series of buttons that all have the same sound ”no icky overlap effects.

    Note

To "fine tune" your buttons, choose Start from the Sync pop-up menu within the Sound panel for each sound of each button state. This way, the sound plays only once and you avoid any unwanted sound stutters or overlap.

  • Stop mutes the specified sound. To use this option, you need to create a new layer, insert a keyframe where you want the specified sound to end, insert the sound you wish to end, and set Sync to Stop.

Tip

The largest number of times you can loop a sound is 99,999,999. That really ought to be sufficient!
